The Unfinished Journey Toward Equality

While the world tirelessly seeks power and dominance, a vital segment remains overlooked. A nation cannot truly prosper without everyone’s contribution. Our duty is not only to recognize the importance of this group in nation-building but also to give them the space and freedom to grow.

India’s Legacy: Triumphs and Trials

India’s history is a tapestry woven with highs and lows in the quest for equal rights:

  • In ancient times, assemblies like the “Sabha” welcomed women’s perspectives in crucial decisions.

  • Eventually, oppressive customs emerged—like sati, forcing women to make the ultimate sacrifice at their husbands’ demise.

As power writes its own history, the stories most widely accepted are not always those closest to the truth.

Why Does Feminism Still Spark Debate?

Despite great strides forward, gender-based discrimination persists worldwide:

  • Pay gaps, glass ceilings in leadership, and restrictions on reproductive rights still exist.

  • Feminism helps us recognize these ongoing injustices and work collectively toward meaningful change.

Patriarchy’s shape varies—Brahmin, tribal, Hindu, and Muslim communities each define it differently. Just as patriarchy is not uniform, neither is feminism; each context requires its own understanding. Sadly, many women have internalized these unequal norms, discouraging challenges to the status quo.

  • Pati Parmeshwar”: If a husband is loving and supportive, he may be revered. But if not, the fight for one’s rights becomes essential.

Ancient Wisdom Illuminates the Present

When answers elude us today, ancient philosophies can light our path from darkness to dawn.

  • Shakti embodies feminine strength—divine, creative, and transformative energy at the core of Hindu philosophy.

  • Manifested as Parvati, Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Kali—each reflecting a distinct facet of feminine power and wisdom.

Reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, and Dayanand Saraswati drew upon the Vedas to champion women’s dignity during the British era.

By the way—do our ancient texts truly define the gender of gods?

Celebrating the Feminine in Culture

History and mythology brims with personalities and symbols highlighting the harmony of the feminine and masculine:

  • Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa: Portrays an ideal human, fusing feminine and masculine essence.

  • Mickey & Minnie Mouse: Teamwork and partnership in tackling life’s challenges.

  • Mary Magdalene and Jesus: Respect and collaboration across traditional gender lines.

  • Radha before Krishna: Revering the feminine prior to invoking the masculine divine.

  • Ardhanareshwara: Lord Shiva as half man, half woman—ultimate union and balance.

  • 'Bharat Mata': Our nation itself visualized through a feminine ideal.

Embracing a Feminine Perspective in a Troubled World

Today’s relentless pursuit of power leads to wars, genocide, and violence. Imagine the compassion and peace that could prevail if we approached these challenges through a feminine perspective—nurturing, empathetic, and inclusive.

Feminism is not just about equality; it’s about uplifting those left behind, ensuring everyone has a place in the journey forward.

Looking Back to Move Ahead

If we revisit our ancient wisdom—the so-called Swarnim Kaal or golden age—we might rediscover values that can make the world a kinder, more harmonious place. Let us draw inspiration from the past to build a brighter, more equitable future for all.
